Shanghai - Day 5

24th July 2009 (Fri)

It's a day for shopping! but before that, we had to fill our tummies! :)
We went walking along the streets near our motel and we manage to find some local snacks sold by street hawkers.. We ate jiao zi (with soup inside!) and shanghai pancake (but other parts of china sells them too~)
I find the pancake really really yummy.. missing them now! *drool* Its crispy on the outside and inside contains salted vegetable (not sure :p), some black sauce, spring onions (which we left out) and a piece of some crispy stuff.. hahaha actually i have noe idea what is really in it! lol.. :p
but i found a video on youtube with a hawker making it! :)
After that we took a cab to 七浦路 which Jia Wei says has cheap shopping. We thought the place would be far away.. but yet it is just a bridge away from where we are staying!
the place is massive... with 4 huge buildings of shops at a junction!
sad.. so near.. and we only have 1 day to conquer it!
We only managed to go to 2 buildings which were recommended by Jia Wei.. the buildings that were connected to each other by a bridge (from the outside).. but actually when u cross it.. it doesn't feel like a bridge.. hee..
Both of them have many storeys and contains rows and rows of shops!! one level for shoes, another level for clothes, another level for bags etc.. but all streetwear kind of clothes.. so wasn't very suitable to the taste of Hui Fang and Wei Chen.. but can buy some basic items bah.. hee... i managed to buy quite a bit of stuff there :p such as vest, pants, jumpsuit etc..
the first building we entered, we were able to bargain.. and i made the mistake of gg into the first few store at the entrance.. i might have got cheated.. but ok lar.. what was unforgettable was the sale woman who kept pulling onto my arm and not letting me go! scared me a little.. :p
the second building we went to, i guess it was more for the wholesellers.. so cannot really bargain.. they would say they are selling u at wholeseller's price.. a little sian though cos cannot get things at a cheaper price.. but nevertheless was still able to buy stuff..
overall the place was considered messy and crowded.. so some patience is needed to be able to find nice stuff :):)
The place starts to close at 5+pm if i remember correctly.. and by then we were already tired from all the walking.. took a cab back to the motel to put down all our shopping bags.. rest a while and met up with Jia Wei for dinner :)

She brought us to 吴江路 (near 南京西路站) which was a 小吃街! One whole street selling Shanghai snacks! *yummy*
Right at the start of the street was this stall selling sticks of different food items which wld be barbequed.. we would place our orders and they would bbq the food on the spot..
We ordered lamb (羊肉串-¥10 for 6 sticks), mushroom (金针菇-¥5 for 6 sticks) and scallops (¥10 for 3).. hee cheap and good! esp the scallops!
We then proceeded to the next stall which sells the same kind of stuff.. but just that they are famous for their octopus (八角鱼- ¥10 for 1 stick)
after the delicious scallops from the previous stall, we wanted more and we bought another 3 from this stall.. but not nice.. cannot compare to the previous one..
Wei Chen's first attempt at eating octopus.. haha other then the red japanese ones..
The BBQ stuff are really very nice.. haha just have to follow people and queue those stalls that have long queues.. (or maybe they have long queues because every one does that? hmm..)
haha anw.. while me and hf were queuing for the BBQ sticks, Jia Wei and Wei Chen went to buy fruit juice for us at another stall with super long queue! their juice are really nice!!! had 2 cups in total for the night - mango and honeydrew juice! lol.. i seldom drink so many fruit juice in a night!

Right at the end of the street is this stall (小杨生煎) selling stir-fried dumplings(生煎包)wow... i can say.. this is the best food eaten for our trip! its something like xiao long bao but much bigger and the skin is not as fragile.. and there is a lot of soup inside that is super nice! and not forgetting the meat too!! yum yumm.. we each had 2 dumplings :p
Look at the reaction of Wei Chen and Jia Wei when the box is opened! lol..

haha by then we have walked to the end of the street.. and.. hee.. as usual.. we have not eaten enough!!! :p
we bought our 2nd drink and went back to the 1st BBQ stall to da bao another set of mushroom, lamb and chicken wings!! greedy us :p:p
then its back to the motel to savour our delicious food~~
what a full day of shopping and shanghai-nese food!!
